THE PRACTICE:      
Level Up Impact   |||

Effective leadership demands a Level Up of Impact on others and the business. It requires an Applied Leadership Practice with a balance of inward and outward focus: mindset and capability. When both are optimal, you get greater scale and influence potential from the shift in the power of your Impact Field.

Leaders operate from a variety of Impact Fields. Leaders negate impact by operating from a Field of Ignoring or Blocking. Leaders support impact by focusing on a Field of Building and Maintaining. However, the frequent aim of many great leaders is to scale impact through Multiplying. The reality is we can shift Impact Fields throughout the day based on our mindset alone. As fragile as mindset can be, the challenge remains that scalable leadership occurs from a return to Multiplying.

There is also a rarefied Impact Field that I call Sourcing. Sourcing for some can seem like magic in that it is effortless because the very presence of this leader inspires innovative ways of thinking, erodes roadblocks of limiting beliefs and clarifies the purpose of engaging. A leader that can Source has taken on deep personal and leadership development as an ongoing practice.

Level Up Impact begins with cultivating a willingness to challenge the status quo and experiment with making shifts to your Core Leadership Elements:

  • Identity – how you see yourself and want to be seen
  • Beliefs – the values and structures you live by
  • Actions – how you behave and what you do
  • Knowledge – the intelligence and know-how you have acquired

These four Core Leadership Elements serve to influence the Impact Field of your Applied Leadership Practices:

  • Wisdom – Make it known. Leading through the cultivation of experiential learning, creative insight, and expertise.
  • Inspiration – Make it believed. Leading through the motivation of vulnerability, encouragement, and positive regard.
  • Innovation – Make it possible. Leading through nurturing of courage, risk-taking and pushing beyond boundaries of belief and know-how.
  • Achievement – Making it real. Leading through fostering meaningful action, visionary and strategic thinking, and applied innovation.

 

The legacy of great leaders is built from excellence in these four Applied Leadership Practices. Great leaders, with humility, take personal responsibility for their impact, especially unintended consequences. We grow as leaders when we have the willingness to look deeper within and acknowledge that the inner work is the true velocity of leadership.
